Occupy Wall Street and then Occupy the World

In recent months demonstrations against government have been popping up world wide.  From Syria to Libya, New York to New Jersey, the public is actively expressing its disgust toward its leaders who not only enforce outdated laws, policies and procedures but control the purse strings too.  What the public at large are communicating is more than a show of lawlessness or anarchy, collectively from the East side of the world to the West, North and South we are saying we are tired of working long days while still earning the wages we were making five years ago at the same time Chief Executive Officers, Presidents, Vice Presidents and the Chairmen of the Board who do nothing more than move money around and play golf all day give themselves raises every six months.  We are sick to our empty stomachs of seeing Politicians, Bankers, Actors/Actresses and people famous for doing nothing traipse around flashing their wealth and status while the 99% of the population continue to struggle trying to put food on the table and clothes on our backs.  Karl Marx has been dead and buried since the late 1800s and yet his theories regarding our capitalistic society still ring true today.  As long as the “dictatorship of the bourgeoisie” remains in its current state of the rich getting richer while the poor get destructively desperate there is no other course of action available other than taking to the streets in protest.  History is clearly repeating itself but the question is what will we learn this time?
"The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles." (Karl Marx)

  • "The proletarians of the world have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workers of all countries: Unite!" (Karl Marx, 1818)
  • “The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress them.”(Karl Marx, 1818)

The Future of Lena Land Books is Dependent on the Present Situation of the World

As a writer the world tends to be my muse, inspiring compassion, anger and truth seeking.  My latest books are inspired by my love for children and controversy.
I am currently working on both adult and children’s fiction.  All in a Day’s Work will fall under fiction as a tragicomedy revolving around the daily grind of a Public Relations office in New York City.  The themes I am exploring in All in a Day’s Work are sexism, racism and classicism in the work place.  Each of these issues are relevant and a staple in today’s society.
On a lighter note, I just completed my fourth children’s book titled First Day of School Blues, which follows a little kid along the journey of the dreaded first day back to school or being in a new one .  My stories whether for children or adults are grounded in reality and based on everyday people.

Author of the Month

Author Lena Williamson is featured in From A Writers POV magazine, one of the best online magazines and  print for the month of September.  Just last month A Diamond in the Rough was featured as Ebook of the Month.  As this authors continues to shine so does Lena Land Books.

FAWPOV:  Why did you decide to become a published author?
After writing the last line of my first book, A Diamond in the Rough I knew that I did not want it to just sit on a shelf collecting dust and I already knew of a family friend who was using the self publishing service Lulu.com so I decided to take a chance and share my work with the public.

FAWPOV: What is your motivation as an author/writer?
My motivation is knowing I have stories to share, ideas to express and a few decades of experience to pass on to future generations, my son included.  Life motivates me, love motivates me and talent sustains me.
FAWPOV: Who/What is your support system?
My support system, which I am fortunate to have, consists of my mother who is unwavering in her love and my personal in-house critic.  My son, who inspires me to imagine more, create more and bring originality to whatever I do.  My significant other also pushes me to dream bigger and reach for the stars.  Without them I would not be as grounded as I am today.
FAWPOV: What is your writing process?
My writing process begins with a can of Pepsi, a pen and a notepad.  I prefer peace and quiet but sometimes ideas flow in while I am on the train, on the bus, even walking to the grocery store.  I write as the ideas come, I do not like to force myself to write anything.  As a writer I am not only concerned with getting the words down or finishing a chapter, I believe reading, editing and rewriting are just as important as each chapter.  Before I can begin a story I make sure to do two important things; make an outline of the story and create character profiles.  Without these two basic steps in writing, my story has no direction or meaning.  Once all of these aspects are in place I can release the dozens of ideas that continuously play out in my head.

FAWPOV: What's next for you? Any events?
I am currently working on my third fiction book titled All in a Day’s Work.  This book will be a little more comical than my previous works.  It will also have an element of suspense.  I am knee deep in the writing, editing and rewriting process.  I do not have any events planned for 2011 but I look forward to attending several book fairs in 2012.

FAWPOV: What advice would you have for other authors?
Good luck and please be honest with yourself as far as success is concerned.  Please do not publish one book and think that you are a literary genius.  Educate yourself on the basics of grammar, use outlines before penning your novel and create realistic characters.  For poets, don’t be afraid to use imagery and descriptive words and most of all write from the heart.

This Can't Be Life

I screamed when I finished reading the last page of this book, suddenly realizing it was the LAST page.  This Can't Be Life by Shakara Cannon is entertaining, heartbreaking, full of suspense and intriguing.
Shakara Cannon is an up and coming author and as an author myself I have to say I am both challenged and excited by her writing.  Her voice is consistent, spread amongst several characters her words come to life from one page to the next.  The characters are very realistic giving you the impression that you know them personally, their strengths and weaknesses.  It was not hard to see reflections of myself in Simone, Talise or Stacey.
This Can't  Be Life can be a best seller and is a must read for the summer.  Shakara is definitely a force to be reckoned and an author to keep an eye out for.  I highly recommend running out and picking up this novel.  Also available on Kindle!

On the Rise Magazine reaches out to Lena Land Books

The latest news from Lena Land Books is an interview with On The Rise magazine.  Their motto is "we support the come up" and I was fortunate to be one of the many authors they are helping establish a place in the world of literature.  The interview is below. Also feel free to check out the magazine and their influence in the world of music, television, film and literature.

OTR: Hello, Lena how are you today?
Lena: I am blessed.
OTR: Tell us about your latest book-
Lena: A Diamond in the Rough is one of several books I released under Lena Land Books.  It is suspense- fiction.  The story is a coming of age tale about a young girl, Diamond.  She thinks she knows everything about life and love until she meets a bad boy and becomes pregnant.  The birth of her first child is a wonderful and life changing event until the death of her son’s father three months later.  After that her life spirals out of control.  She goes from one extreme to the next to provide for her son.  Diamond finally gets on track, earning enough money to move out of the projects that her mother, herself and her child were born into.  By then it is too late and Diamond has to pay for her dark past.
OTR: Who is your publisher?
Lena: I self-publish all of my work through Lulu.com.
http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=4396638
OTR: How and when did you first become a traditionally-published author?
Lena: My publishing is non-traditional because I self-publish.  There are many publishing houses but none of them came knocking at my door so I decided to put my books out independent of traditional publishers.  However, I started working with Lulu.com in 2007.
OTR: How long have you been writing?
Lena: I have been writing since the age of eight, if memory serves me correctly.
OTR: Who inspires you as a writer?
Lena: All writers inspire me.  I am just as fascinated by reading Maya Angelou as I am reading Richard Wright.
OTR: What makes you stand out as a writer?
Lena: My stories.  My first book, A Diamond in the Rough is loosely based around my own experience of meeting my son’s father, becoming engaged, pregnant and ultimately widowed.  I am sure all writers draw upon their experiences.  Also I am marketing myself as not only an author but the President of Lena Land Books as well.
OTR: Where do you see yourself within the next several years?
Lena: I can see myself releasing more books, doing more interviews and eventually hearing my name mentioned with the greats such as; Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison, Richard Wright, Walt Whitman and so many others.
OTR: What else do you do besides write?
Lena: I am an Office Manager for MMG Mardiks, Public Relations.  I am a mother.  I also like to help others who feel they want to write a book, their memoirs or poetry but don’t know where to start.
OTR: Why did you decide to become a professional writer?
Lena: Before I go to bed at night I think about writing.  When I wake up in the morning I have dozens of ideas for other books.  I live to write.  It’s my passion.
OTR: Who are your favorite authors?
Lena: This is such an unfair question for me.  I enjoy reading journalistic essays by Joan Didion, Toni Morrison, Richard Wright, W.E.B DuBoise, Mark Twain, Shirley Jackson, Dr. Seuss and Emily Dickinson.  I think I’ll stop here.
OTR: What are your favorite books?
Lena: The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Neffinegger, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Richard Wright, SubKorean by Charles Kim and A Diamond in the Rough by Lena Williamson.
OTR: What is it that you most people do not know about you?
Lena: Most people do not know me at all.  My closest friends would say I’m a hermit.  I enjoy being alone.  I was raised as an only child (half-brother on my father’s side) and my imagination created a foundation for the type of writer I am.  I live in my head.
OTR: What do you think catapulted your success as an author?
Lena: :-) My persistence.  Each and everyday I think of another way to get myself and Lena Land Books noticed.  No matter what obstacles come across my path I believe persistence overcomes resistance.

Destiny's Revenge

Sorrowful hugs from people I don’t know telling me that if I need anything they’d be happy to help.  Words of praise from a pastor who never met my grandma but speaks of her being the angel I know her to be. Tears falling from faces I never seen before and most likely will never see again.  Holding on to her stiff hand, hidden in a pearl white, satin glove, for what seems like only seconds. They have to drag me away, outside in
the pouring rain because that’s the only way I’ll let go. Let go, of the only person on this earth who took care of me and loved me? I don’t know anybody that would. Crying so much that I think I cried myself to sleep. I did this for months until I learned to cry on the inside.  Dame was going through the same feelings of loss,
how could he take care of me? He ain’t even eighteen yet. Grandma ALWAYS talked about God, praising him, thanking him, talking to him as if he was one of her oldest and dearest friends when she thought no one else was listening. I never cared for God much until the day of her funeral. I was begging, pleading and even trying to barter with him, on my knees on the rain-soaked concrete. I was waiting on my grandma to walk
out of that dark and dreadful place. She never did. I would give God another chance to prove himself
but no time soon.A couple of weeks later after grandma’s death I remember Dame telling me that we couldn’t stay in our house no more. The bank owned it, not us.  He couldn’t afford to take it over and we would have to run away or the state of New York would become our family. I didn’t know what that meant
until I ended up in a group home. The day the social worker came to my school no one could stop her from taking me and Dame was in the streets somewhere.  I shut down and found safety only inside of myself. I stay to myself at all times. If someone tries to talk to me, kids, adults, even my own social worker, I walk away. If I can’t walk away I stare off into space and let my mind wander off. After two weeks of doing this they wanted to have my head examined. A seven-thirty exam is what I heard them call it, like I was fucking crazy. Who wouldn’t be, I’ve been through some shit. They had my file; they knew I was a decent student, not
mute, not deaf, just dead on the inside. I was scared they might put me in the loony bin so I decided to open up a little for the social worker.  She seems half decent. It wasn’t too long after this she told me that I might have a chance at ending up with a nice family. My age would be an issue she said but since I wasn’t raised in the system my behavior would be tame compared to some of the other teenagers. Anything had to be better then living with thieves, having my one pair of black and red suede Jordan’s and red and black Ed Hardy
tank top stolen. What more could they take from me? Of course they give you hand me downs but I felt
safe wearing clothes that were apart of my life before this. Those clothes reminded me of who I used to be. I used to laugh, I had friends, and I knew what it felt like to be loved and to love in return.
“Destiny will you give it a try? I have the ideal family in mind?”
“Where they live, they got kids?”
“They have a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights and yes they have two boys of their own. You would make their family complete. They really want a girl around.”
“How old are the boys?”
“I believe six and ten years old. Will that be a problem?”
“No just wondering. Is it a mom and a dad or what?”
“Yes, both parents live in the household. The mother works part-time outside of the home and the father is a pastor of a small congregation, Pastor John.”

ANSWERS
I hate my parents, why did I even exist. I know I have to be a mistake. I’m a bastard, the daughter of a junkie mother and a two-timing father. I’m not even mad at the fact that my mother was a dope-fiend, it’s the way she died that I am ashamed and disgusted by. Overdose? She couldn’t even get high right, fucking pathetic. My father is no damn better. Married with three kids, one on the way with his wife and me close behind with someone else. Loser. He deserved to die the way he did. Alone and bleeding out of multiple wounds until he was as empty as I am. At least Dame’s father tried to do right by my whore of a mother.
He probably crashed head on into something to get away from her ass. I know the damn story about
him losing control of the car but he probably did it on purpose. I hate my life.I need answers and the only place to start is where it all went down, Pain Street. Who would I talk to?My mother’s friends have probably moved away by now and my father wasn’t around long enough to make a dent or leave an impression. I don’t even know my grandparents, his mother and father and I’m sure they know nothing about me. Maybe
someone will recognize me, I’m much lighter than my mother but I’m sure she left her mark on me.  Before I could open my mouth to ask for help, an old man started running his. He had a huge hanging bottom lip as pink as my tongue with one tooth hanging from the top of his mouth by a thread and began to laugh. He began clapping his hands as if applauding me which threw me off a little. What the fuck does this weirdo want?

A Diamond in the Rough

The Beginning of the End…
Diamond got the kids ready for school but she didn’t rush like usual. She knew the DMV would be crowded no matter what time she got there. The telephone company was sending out someone to install the phone lines so Diamond asked her mother to take the day off. Diamond dropped the kids off at school and went to have
breakfast, which she hardly ever did. The last time she did was when Fats died and she just needed to be alone, to think, to re-evaluate life’s worth. She headed to the DMV after she left the restaurant. She was there by ten o’clock.Surprisingly the lines were short and it wasn’t even crowded, thank God she thought. She looked around because she always saw somebody she knew when she went to the DMV.  Diamond saw two familiar faces that left chills running through her body.  She couldn’t remember where she knew them from but she knew it wasn’t a pleasant memory.  The faces belonged to two women one was tall and thick, the other petite. Both women were well dressed and slightly attractive but at the moment they weren’t too friendly looking. They must have recognized Diamond. As she went to look away one of the women
started to make a call on her cell phone. She hated to stare but she couldn’t keep her eyes off these
women. There was something about them she just couldn’t shake.  She paid close attention to the bigger woman because she had the most familiar face and she also was the one who made the call. The smaller woman shot her a look and if looks could kill Diamond would have been dead and buried. She tried to jog her memory of where she knew these bitches from. By now she was tight at the fact that she didn’t know these ho’s and they kept looking at her like they wanted to do battle. She didn’t know why they looked at her with such hatred. She wouldn’t hurt a fly. Bam! It came to her. Those bitches were her wife-in-laws and they were Bamboozles ho’s. Juicy and Queen were walking in Diamond’s direction as if they knew it had come to her who they were. The memories she tried to bury had come flooding back. Her heart was racing, she knew they knew that she had left him for dead or at least had something to do with it. Diamond knew that what you do in the dark always came to light but all she could think was oh God not now.
“Excuse me Ms. You look awfully familiar, is your name Diamond?”
“No you must have me mistaken for someone else.”

“Bitch, don’t play we have a lot of unfinished business to do away with.”
“Remember me bitch, I tried to school you and you do some grimy shit like you did, you better bring your punk ass with us before we drag you out of here cave man style.”
“Well since you’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse.” Diamond tried to be as cool as ice but she was shaking like a leaf and her heart was beating so fast she prayed she have a heart attack right then and there. The ho’s led Diamond out of the DMV across the street to a black Cadillac Escalade truck with dark tinted windows. As they pushed her towards the front passenger side the window rolled down just enough so Diamond could see a pair of eyes. As she approached the truck she had a flash of her son and daughter playing with her mother and than a second flash of Fats reaching out his hand. Her vision was interrupted by a familiar voice and a pair of eyes, like death peering through the cracked window.
“I know you thought we’d never meet again.”
Diamond knew that voice but the only time she thought she’d hear it again was in hell. It was Bam and he wasn’t smiling when he rolled down that window.
“So you fuck me, suck me, try to kill me and just run out on me. Diamond you look real good, but that won’t last long. How is your son, I hope he has a little black suit.”

Bound by Time

At all times I am yours,
for all time you are mines.
The potent glue that seals us;
we are bound by time.
Lost in the moments, the seconds fly by,
but the memories that exist
are endless, if only in our minds.
Husbands chained to their wives
gladly awaiting death to depart.
Parents attached to their children,
invisible strings tug at their hearts.
But our love is not held
together by vows or by blood.
We are linked by the minutes,
secure in the hours and
joined through the years
that time has allowed us.
